For many years, the Chernyak family enjoyed a comfortable life in Chernihiv, with Roma, the father, working as a jeweler. In March 2022, everything changed, as missiles rained down on their city.
The apartment building where they lived was one of several destroyed in the large scale attack:
"The main thing is that everyone is alive," said the parents, grateful their sons were not injured.
The family lost everything, "Everything turned upside down," said Roma. They went to the synagogue for help, where local volunteers were working alongside JRNU and Life Changer staff, distributing large quantities of food, medicine and household items, some donated by Jewish communities from other cities. Many people were gathered inside, including relatives from abroad of the bombing victims.
Over the past couple of years the Chernyak family has managed to recover from the tragedy of the Chernihiv attack, and they have even been able to help others who continue to struggle. The family is now expecting a baby:
“I am infinitely grateful to G-d for such a gift of fate and for the fact that there are so many kind and caring Jews in the world who work with organizations and foundations like JRNU to help families in their time of need.”
Together we save lives and restore hope.
