A Miracle in Kyiv Spares School Children

OCTOBER 30TH 2024

Today in Kyiv, community leaders and families are recovering from shock after their school was struck by a drone just before children were set to arrive. An adjacent building was also hit leaving several people injured.

The Perlina school suffered substantial damage to classrooms, the transport vehicle, and the students’ rest area. Over the past year the windows of the school had been fortified with protective glazing, which prevented more significant destruction.

Kyiv’s Chief Rabbi, Yonatan Markovitch, called it a “tremendous miracle” that no one was present during the explosion. He and his wife, met with city officials at the school shortly after the strike, to evaluate the damage and establish a plan to continue operating the school:

“The light of Torah and Jewish education in Kyiv will not be extinguished,” he stated. “Our mission to educate and uplift our children continues, even in challenging times.”

Our leaders and staff are conducting a comprehensive damage assessment and will begin repairs as soon as possible. The school has served as an important center for Kyiv’s Jewish community throughout the conflict, providing critical support for Jewish students and families in the city.

Together we save lives and restore hope.
