On July 4th, Americans celebrate our country's birth 247 years ago. Since that day, there have been many accomplishments for which we take great pride; there have also been many mistakes and misdeeds that remain as stains on our history.
Liberty, freedom and opportunity are the foundation of our country. Sadly, many people around the world do not live in a place where they are (relatively) safe in their homes, can come and go as they please (across states and even countries), have education and career opportunities to provide for their families, and are free to practice their religion and celebrate their culture and ethnicity.
We especially remember the people of Ukraine who have endured nearly 17 months of war: they have endured death and grave harm to family and friends, been deprived of medicine and medical care, gone without food and water, spent days in the cold and dark, and experienced disasters of all kinds. They have lost their jobs, homes and belongings; and they have been separated from loved ones.
As we celebrate our Day of Independence in the United States, let’s celebrate the resilience of the Ukrainian people, and let’s appreciate the generosity of people around the world who allow us to save lives and restore hope.
