Celebrating Lag B’Omer in the Midst of Crisis

MAY 28th 2024

This past weekend, Jews around the world celebrated Lag B’Omer, while in Ukraine communities were again struck by tragedy. In Kharkiv, 14 people were killed, many more were injured, and 16 are missing. In Mykolaiv, Odessa, Dnipro, Poltava, Zaporizhzhia, Khmelnytskyi, Vinnytsia and Chernihiv, rockets and missiles were intercepted, saving those residents from harm. The attacks serve as poignant reminders of the ongoing crisis.

Despite the tragedies and trauma, the Jewish communities of Ukraine came together to celebrate the holiday. In Kyiv, Vinnytsia, Kharkov, Odessa, and Kremenchug, gatherings included moon bounce castles, archery contests, and parades with marching bands. Children enjoyed special treats, colorful balloons, and bright hats; a good time was had by all!

Throughout the day, the theme was positivity, unity and strength. The Jewish communities all across Ukraine continually remind us of their resilience, determination and hope.

Together we save lives and restore hope.

Together we Save Lives and Restore Hope!
