Celebrating Tu BiShvat in Kyiv: Out of the Rubble

FEBRUARY 19TH 2024

Last week, the Perlina Jewish school in Kyiv celebrated Tu BiShvat with a tree planting ceremony and a traditional ceremonial meal. The celebration held particular significance, as it took place at the recently restored school building that suffered significant damage from a drone strike several months ago.

Chief Rabbi of Kyiv, Rabbi Yonatan Markovitch, led the ceremony, emphasizing the symbolism of planting trees during challenging times: “Each tree we plant represents our unwavering faith in life and the future.”

The event was attended by seven ambassadors and nine consuls from various countries, highlighting international support for Kyiv’s Jewish community.

The day concluded with special performances by Perlina students, who expressed their love for nature and aspirations for peace through music and dance. It is an honor for JRNU to support Perlina and other Jewish schools throughout Ukraine. Ensuring the engagement and education of Ukrainian Jewish youth is critical to the long term vitality of the Jewish communities.
