Crisis in Ukraine Pushes Jews Towards Faith

MAY 23RD 2024

In times of crisis, many people turn to religion for comfort and explanation: prayers, personal reflections, rituals and speaking with spiritual leaders are effective coping mechanisms that help individuals feel grounded.

“Since the beginning of the crisis, we have witnessed an increased awakening of Jews throughout Ukraine,” said Mrs. Chani Axelrod, who works with her husband Rabbi Dov Axelrod to support the Cherkasy Jewish community. “People who previously did not recognize their Judaism suddenly began appearing at the synagogue, seeking spiritual reinforcement and material assistance.”

But, the ongoing crisis caused many leaders to flee, making it impossible for rabbis and their families to continue supporting the Jewish communities:

“More than fifty percent of the key figures in our community have left and not returned. In their place, we brought in people to fill their roles, but they needed proper training,” said Rebbetzin Axelrod.

In cooperation with the Israeli Ministry of Diaspora Affairs and Combating Antisemitism Ministry, JRNU launched a seminar to train new leaders, through distance learning, and personal meetings.

Avi Cohen-Scali, Minister of Diaspora Affairs explained, “The crisis in Ukraine brought Jewish communities unprecedented challenges, and as such, a stable and strong leadership cadre was required. It was a great honor for the State of Israel to support this important project and take part in training the existing and future leadership.”

“So far, more than 125 leaders have registered,” said Rebbetzin Kaminetzky, who, along with her husband Rabbi Shmuel Kaminetzky, supports the Jewish communities in Dnipro.

“Throughout the past two difficult years in Ukraine,” concluded Minister Chikli, “we repeatedly saw the great dedication of the rabbis to maintaining Jewish communities, and we understood that they are the most significant force in sustaining, preserving, and developing these important Jewish enclaves. The new program was designed to provide real and practical tools for continuing their important mission.”
