This year the holiday of Purim will begin on the evening of Thursday, March 13th, and continue until the evening of March 14, when the Sabbath begins (continuing until Sunday night in Jerusalem). It is a time of celebrations, giving, joy and fun. People will gather for the reading of the Megillah (the Book of Esther), which recounts the story of the Purim miracle, with children shaking their noisemakers each time Haman’s name is recited. They will give gifts, send food packages, and gather for a Purim meal with wine and hamantaschen. Many children (and some adults) will dress up in costumes to add to the festive atmosphere.
In Ukraine, thousands of people received gift boxes distributed by JRNU; children received their own special treat boxes at schools and afterschool programs, where they enjoyed parties with music and parades.
It is a privilege to be able to help those in need, to bring them much needed light and joy.
Now more than ever, the Jewish community in Ukraine needs our support and solidarity.
We wish everyone a wonderful Purim holiday!
