Earlier today the Kakhovka hydroelectric station in the Kherson Region exploded, destroying a nearby dam and causing flooding downstream on the Dnipro River. The situation in Kherson is desperate, tens of thousands of people are in immediate danger. Houses are flooding, with waters rising 10 feet in some places--people must abandon their homes immediately.
Rabbi Yosef Yitzhak Wolf, Chabad emissary in Kherson described the situation:
"We have several dozen families that we are working to evacuate to alternative residences. Our synagogue, which sits on higher ground, is always open--we will have to arrange for them to live here-- those who want to stay here in the city. Most of them are older people who don't want to leave the place. They don't have the mental and physical strength to move. They are there and we take care of them. Whoever wants to travel, we will take care of the travel for them."
Fortunately, Rabbi Wolf and the JRNU are veterans of this war, and "are very organized in every way, with food, water and generators - for extreme cases where there is no electricity or water, " Rabbi Wolf explained.
These extraordinary humanitarian efforts to evacuate and house people, and to provide food, water and other supplies are costly. A 6 liter bottle of water has quadrupled in price in the past 24 hours! Your help is needed.
