Israel's Ministry of Diaspora Affairs has been supportive of JRNU's work since the onset of the war. They have taken a deep and personal interest in the welfare of the Ukrainian Jews, including visiting to the Zhitomer orphanage (currently in Ashkelon, Israel) and the Odessa orphanage, convening meetings at the Knesset and in Ukraine, and maintaining constant communication with JRNU leaders.
Recently Minister Amichai Chikli met with Rabbi Jonathan Markovitch, Chief Rabbi of Kyiv, and his wife Eika, to discuss the latest developments. Rabbi Markovich explained the ongoing and growing needs in Kyiv and throughout Ukraine (aid is not limited to Jews):
“During the crisis, many new members joined the community,” said Rabbi Markowitz. “Many Jews who had nothing to do with Judaism or a Jewish identity asked to join and be registered as community members in order to receive community, mental, and humanitarian support.”
Rabbi Markovich thanked Minister Chikli for supporting the summer camps and other important activities for Jewish communities in Ukraine. Minister Chikli discussed the new mental health project under development to support Ukrainian treatment professionals and community members which will be of great assistance to address the ongoing trauma and stress that is prevalent throughout the country.
Minister Chikli pledged ongoing support and assistance for humanitarian aid and for activities that strengthen the Jewish communities in Ukraine. Following the meeting, the Executive Director of the Ministry of Diaspora Affairs spoke with Rabbi Markovich and reiterated the commitment to continued cooperation and support for the Jews of Ukraine.
We are grateful for the compassion and generosity of the Ministry of Diaspora Affairs. Their support has been essential to our work saving lives and restoring hope.
