After nearly 3 years of war, the people in Ukraine are more desperate than ever. The air attacks are relentless, threatening lives and homes; extended power outages leave people in the cold and dark for hours on end, and the economic challenges continue to mount. The toll on kids is evident, as many struggle with their school work and social interactions. Parents are exhausted from stress and worry, and the elderly are increasingly anxious and fearful. Our work is critical to ensuring the survival of thousands of individuals, supporting their daily needs and maintaining hope for the future.
Local community leaders throughout the country regularly engage with those who live in the cities and towns as well as the outlying areas to understand the needs and provide support. Events at the synagogues and community centers draw people in, providing opportunities for people to engage with their peers, to share stories, experiences and encouragement. Our staff and volunteers often use these buildings as distribution sites for food and essential items including warm clothing, household goods and vouchers. Individual meetings are held as well, allowing leaders and staff to get a detailed understanding of the situations families are facing.
JRNU coordinators and social workers in Jewish communities around the country support the elderly and/or infirm who are unable to leave their home, by delivering hot meals, nursing care, and other assistance as needed. We have been arranging for medical care and dental care for children, psychological support (therapy and counseling), academic tutoring, speech therapy and more.
The work we have been doing to support the Jews of Ukraine for the past 3 years continues 24 hours each day, 7 days each week. We are committed to sustaining the physical, mental, and spiritual needs of each individual person, ensuring their daily survival as well as preparing them for the future.
Together we save lives and restore hope.
