The people of Uzhhorod find a way to make do, despite ongoing challenges. The Jews have been resilient; after the (Jewish) population of nearly 10,000 was decimated during World War II, they found a way to rebuild and recreate a vibrant community with religious, academic, and social services institutions.
Over the past year, the population of Jews in Uzhhorod increased significantly, as people seek refuge in the city on the banks of the Uzh River, in the Carpathian mountains region. As one of 24 regional capitals, job opportunities are more plentiful here than in other parts of the country. We regularly assist with resettlement efforts, providing household and personal items, as well as food and medicine.
This time of year is challenging for residents of Uzhhorod as the temperature hovers in the 20’s and 30’s, with significant amounts of snow. The winter survival kits we distributed, along with warm clothing, have been critical for many families.
We continue to support and encourage the people of Uzhhorod, and we help them welcome the newcomers to their community. With your assistance, we save lives and restore hope.
