Sukkot in Ukraine

OCTOBER 16TH 2024

This year 40,000 families across Ukraine received food packages for the High Holidays. And thanks to the leadership of Rabbi Nachum Ehrentrau, Chief Rabbi of Zaporizhzhia, hundreds of sets of the Four Species, essential for the Sukkot holiday, arrived in Ukraine directly from Israel.

Up until the last few days, it was uncertain whether the Four Species would arrive in time to be distributed before Sukkot. Thanks to the heroic efforts of leaders, staff and volunteers, hundreds of etrogs, lulavs, hadassim, and aravot were safely transported through several countries, and then delivered to all the Jewish communities. Miraculously, even Jews who live in small and remote villages, and those who remain in the high-risk areas, received the special items that symbolize the unity of Jews.

The complicated, expensive, and even dangerous project reflects our deep and abiding commitment to the Jews of Ukraine, to remind them that they remain an integral part of our community.

During Sukkot, many families will gather for meals in a local community Sukkah, where they will receive nourishment for their souls as well as their bodies. Children have been enjoying the special treats that were included in the holiday gift boxes we distributed, along with the gift cards for local department stores. With each month that the crisis continues, the Jewish communities welcome more people to events and gatherings. The warmth and comfort of community has never been more important or more needed.

It is an honor and privilege to help those in need and we are grateful to our generous donors who make our work possible.

We wish everyone a wonderful Sukkot holiday, and may we all enjoy a year of peace and joy.

Together, we Save Lives and Restore Hope!
