The Children of Ukraine: Mental Health Needs Continue

MARCH 14TH 2024

War, conflict, and displacement have profound psychological impacts, particularly on children and adolescents. Traumatic events such as loss or injury to loved ones and family separation create significant risk of lasting psychological damage, including anxiety, and depression. Additionally, the disruption to daily life, including education, social interactions, and access to essential services negatively affect child development and emotional well-being.

After living through more than two years of crises, many children in Ukraine are showing signs of cognitive and emotional delays, as well as increased rates of anxiety and depression.

We have been fostering resilience and providing psychological interventions to help young people cope with the conflict, almost since the war began. In addition to local professionals, we rely on teachers, camp counselors, and others who receive special training to address the mental health challenges facing Ukrainian children. The social support from family, friends, and community members has been crucial for fostering psychological adaptation and promoting mental health.

We continue our efforts to expand access to mental health services, and encourage collaboration between mental health providers, schools, and community organizations, to help young people process their emotions and experiences, and reduce the risk of long-term mental health problems. The strong social support networks in place within the Jewish communities foster resilience and promote long-term recovery.

We are grateful for the compassion and dedication of the staff and volunteers who prioritize the well-being of children, often at their own expense.

Thank you to all the generous donors who are helping us prepare for the upcoming Purim holiday, when the children will have an opportunity for fun and celebration, and enjoy a brief respite from the stress and strain of war.

With your help we save lives and restore hope.

Together we Save Lives and Restore Hope!
