Tomorrow is the saddest day on the Jewish calendar, the holiday of Tisha B'Av, when we mourn the destruction of the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem. On this day we remember many other tragedies that befell the Jews on this date in history, and we especially remember people facing persecution and suffering around the world.
Last year at this time, many people believed the situation in Ukraine would be resolved by now; sadly that is not the case. Over the past 12 months many tragedies have befallen the people of Ukraine. We are sorry for their losses and suffering, and we pray for peace soon.
With support from many individuals and organizations around the world, we continue our lifesaving work. More than 50,000 men, women and children rely on us each month to help with their daily needs. They also rely on us for mental and spiritual support as well, which we provide in a variety of ways. The camps we operated this summer gave thousands of children an opportunity to connect with their peers in the Jewish community, and explore their Jewish identity, while escaping the trauma of war. The schools and after school programs we operate offer supportive, welcoming and nurturing environments where children develop, grow, and explore. Parents take comfort in knowing their children are safe and cared for while at the same time learning about religion, culture, heritage and more. Regular religious services and observances are open to all.
On this solemn day we pray for the safety and well-being of people throughout the world, especially for the people of Ukraine.
